The land was originally owned by Marvin and Mary Johnson. In 1965 they opened the Gourd Museum on the property and were known as the world-wide authority on gourd art. While open, the museum attracted visitors ranging from school groups, Fuquay farmers and TV crews to gourd lovers from all over the world. The collection includes gourd lamps, musical instruments, a variety of animals, a gourd Popeye, African mammoth gourds strong enough to stand on, and a rendition of the Last Supper made from seeds. Currently, the collection is on display at the Angier municipal building.

In honor of Marvin & Mary's love for their gourds all the streets in Johnson's Landing are named for gourds

Gourd:Specifically the bottle gourd is also a common Chinese symbol for longevity as well as good luck. It is thought that the gourd holds magic nectar which is consumed by many Buddhist deities. Sau, the Chinese god of longevity brandishes the gourd at the end of his staff, this is said to contain the elixir of immortality. Gourds are painted with the Chinese symbol for longevity and then displayed in the home to ward off harmful energies - thus promoting long life.
